Beschreibung:	Der Intercontinental Title wurde 1979 eingeführt und agiert seit dieser Zeit als zweithöchster Einzeltitel, den ein Wrestler in der Promotion erringen kann. Viele spätere World Champions haben zunächst um diesen Titel gekämpft. Nach einer halbjährigen Auszeit zwischen 2002 und 2003 ist der Titel neu aufgelegt worden als Sekundärtitel des RAW-Rosters der WWE. Im Jahr 2009 wechselte der Gürtel durch einen Draft von Titelträger Rey Mysterio zu SmackDown.

Die WWE entschied sich dazu, den Intercontinental Title einzustellen, um dem neu eingeführten World Title vom RAW Brand mehr Bedeutung zuzumessen. Kane verlor ein Unifikationsmatch gegen Triple H bei No Mercy 2002 und der Titel wurde eingestellt. Als Steve Austin zum Co-General Manager von RAW erklärt wurde, führte er den Intercontinental Title - nun ohne WWE davor, um ihn als RAW Title zu klassifizieren - wieder ein und setzte eine Battle Royal fest, um den neuen Champion zu krönen.
